Inverse Problems in Underwater Acoustics

The paper presents an overview of the inverse problems associated with applications of underwater acoustics. The problems are classified into four main categories, according to the recoverable quantities : Acoustic source localization, bottom identification, ocean acoustic tomography and target recognition. The paper gives emphasis to the three first categories, and includes methods to solve th...

Constrained Channel Estimation Methods in Underwater Acoustics

Underwater acoustic signal processing aims to reconstruct the shallow water acoustic channel from both direct arrival and delayed multipath reflections. This enables accurate acoustic communications in shallow water, such as between underwater autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which are essential for coastal surveillance and other applications. In this work, we take a previously implemented algorithm...

Time delay and amplitude estimation in underwater acoustics: a Gibbs Sampling approach

Multipath arrivals of a signal at a receiving sensor are frequently encountered in many areas of signal processing, including sonar, radar, and communication problems. In underwater acoustics, numerous approaches to source localization, geoacoustic inversion, and tomography rely on accurate multipath arrival extraction. In this work, a novel method for estimation of time delays and amplitudes o...

Solutions to the Discrete Airy Equation: Application to Parabolic Equation Calculations

In the case of the equidistant discretization of the Airy differential equation (“discrete Airy equation”) the exact solution can be found explicitly. This fact is used to derive a discrete transparent boundary condition (TBC) for a Schrödinger–type equation with linear varying potential, which can be used in “parabolic equation” simulations in (underwater) acoustics and for radar propagation i...

A Flexible Solver of the Helmholtz Equation for Layered Media

A flexible solver for the Helmholtz equation is presented. The implementation of the solver is done in an object-oriented style, allowing for easy adaptation to different application problems. The solution methods that are employed are fast compared with standard solution techniques. The viability of the solver is demonstrated for realistic problems in underwater acoustics.
